We live in a fast-paced society. Walking slows us down - Robert Sweetgall

Ditch the hotel this weekend for a stay here at Dell-Mar Bed and Breakfast, with so many amazing walks a weekend just isn`t long enough. Take a hike up Grey Mare`s Tail or a gentle stroll along the river, here are my Top 4 walks you can enjoy here in and around Moffat.

But if these are not enough, we`ll point you in the right direction to some of our other favourites.

  • Grey Mare`s Tail
As you head out of Moffat along the A708 towards Selkirk, you`ll see this iconic landmark. Grey Mare`s Tail is a spectacular waterfall that plunges 60m down from Loch Skeen in the hills. Parking is £3.00 for the day so there`s no need to rush. It`s a good old hike to the top but well worth the breath-taking views once you get there. Take a picnic and a flask of tea and as you reach Loch Skeen sit, relax and enjoy the peace and quite, you`ll love it.
A view of the twisting road, it`s a valley in the middle of hills and the sky is very dull and cloudy, there is a stream running towards the road. There is some small heather on the ground and lots of green grass
There is a big lake in the middle of the hills, on the side is some heather and there is a flask and a cup at the side.
A big Loch in the middle of hills, there is lots of green grass and heather.

  • St Mary`s Loch
I love this walk and especially if the sun is shining, the views are amazing. It`s not a strenuous walk and this makes it all the more to enjoy. Again heading on the A708 towards Selkirk St Mary`s Loch is about 30 minutes drive from Moffat. Parking is free at James Hogg`s memorial, here you`ll find a small café where you can pop in for a cuppa and a bite to eat. It`s a circular walk and about 7 miles, if you`re lucky enough you might see the odd fighter jet flying by. I`d recommend stopping off at St Mary`s Kirkyard and enjoy the view, it`s truly magical.
A wayward marker saying " Ring of the Loch 7 miles" the sky is blue and there are trees in the back ground
A bench with a flask and a bag on, the view is of a loch and hills, the sky is blue and there are a few clouds
A fighter jet flying over hills and a Loch, there are trees and the sky is blue with a few clouds

  • Hartfell Spa or Merlins Trail
It`s lead to believe that Merlin lived in the caves at Hartfell Spa for over 10 years, but is this fact or fake? Along the Old Edinburgh Road you`ll find the start of the trail. Parking at Annan Water Hall take the path through the kissing gate and head up through the valley. An easy steady walk up the hill, be careful before you head towards the Spa as the path is very narrow under foot. The water is said to be rich in iron and helps to cure "debility and anaemia", it`s certainly worth a taste. Take a torch and see the carved stone on the ceiling.
A sign explaining about Merlins Trail, there is writing, a map and a picture on, it`s at the side of a stone wall and it`s has grass around it
Views of the valley with hills that are green with grass, there is a stream running through the middle, the sky is grey and cloudy
A cave in the hill, the walls are stone and the top is grass, there is a sign outside and a small fence around.

  • Moffat
However Moffat has some beautiful scenery just a few minutes walk out of town, and anytime of the day you can pop your boots on and take a wee wander around the beautiful countryside, from Gallow Hill, Hind Hill or even just along the river, there`s something to suit every ability. We`d be happy to help you plan your weekend getaway here in Moffat
The hills with the sunsetting, the hills are green and there is a house in the middle, the sky is blue and orange and there are a few clouds
A pond with a small shed on the other side, the water is still and there is green fields on the other side, there are a few trees
Through the trees you can see hills that are green and there are trees on them too. The leaves are brown.
