The best 7 beaches here in D&G
We love going to the beach, walking along the coastal paths are truly amazing. Here in Dumfries and Galloway we have some of the most breath-taking beaches and scenery than anywhere else in Scotland.
  • Southerness
  • Sandyhills
  • Rockcliffe
  • Dhoon
  • Brighouse Bay
  • Carrick Bay
  • Mossyard
Whether you`re after a stroll along the sands or a walk along the hills, here are a few of our favourite beaches.
  • Southerness -  you`ll walk for miles along this beautiful sandy yet rocky beach, at low tide there are rockpools which are quite interesting. Southerness is famous for it`s lighthouse, completed in 1749 it`s the second oldest in Scotland, although it`s now decommissioned visitors can still take a peak inside during the summer. Occasionally you might spot seals, porpoise and dolphins in the Solway firth.
  • Sandyhills - at low tide the beach reaches for miles which makes it an excellent location for walkers,  with natural beauty and a great coastal path to Rockcliffe this is certainly one for the list.
  • Rockcliffe - renown as one of the best areas of coastline in Scotland. This beach is small but picturesque with rocks surrounding it, with many marked routes and an excellent coastal path, it`s a walkers paradise. Rough Island is a few hundred metres from the beach with lot`s of birds, although during May and June it`s off limits due to them nesting. It can be reached on foot but it`s advisable to check the tide levels beforehand allowing plenty time as not to get caught out by the rising tides.
  • Dhoon - a small sandy beach also known as Goat Well Bay, popular with walkers as the Senwick Shore is easily accessible from the car park. The water is relatively shallow here and you`ll find lot`s of rockpools to explore. At low tide it`s possible to see the shipwreck of the "Monrieth" a wooden schooner which was wrecked in 1900, there were no casualties as the crew managed to get ashore.

A rocky beach with the sea, there are hills in the distance and the sky is blue with some white clouds
A beach with the sea, there are are some small mounds at the side with grass on and in the distance are hills, the sky is blue with white clouds
A grassy path at the side of the sea looking out to the blue sea water, there are hills in the distance and the sky is blue with some white clouds
The beautiful beaches in Dumfries and Galloway

  • Brighouse - with outstanding views of the surrounding rural area, it`s makes it a haven for walkers. There`s a circular walk taking you over the cliff tops, along the beach and inland to admire the outstanding beauty.
  • Carrick Bay - thanks to it`s remoteness Carrick Bay rarely gets busy so it`s ideal for walkers to enjoy this unspoilt wild and mountainous headline and coast. A picnic is advisable, as facilities are few and far between, the small beach is accessible by a track road.
  • Mossyard - a small beach popular for boating, with small boats allowed to launch from the beach to explore Fleet Bay. A great place for walking with Galloway Forest National Park close by, but for a bit of adventure, why not try Laggan Outdoor Activity Centre.

With so much to see and do in the South West of Scotland.
